1. Mirror Magic
TBH my feelings were a little hurt
When I walked into this picture.
A mirror can turn us into
Self obsessed bores.
But sometimes
And in this case
A mirror can bring me out of myself
And into the world.
Big mirrors
Right size us.
This public space was empty
It was mid show.
I collected myself
And retrieved my missing pieces
And returned to the fray.
Listening to the talent play.
Some days
Looking at myself in the eye
While I line them
Helps my go eye to eye with myself
Get real.
Honest.
I love that make-up
Is what we say when we resolve an argument.
Sometimes I think of putting on make-up that way.
Resolving an argument
With myself.
PS This was at the Theater at he Ace Hotel.
I loved being on that stage for the UnCabaret 25th Anniversary Show.
One of the best venues.
Context matters.
Frames matter.
Mirrors are part of that framing.
2. Mirror Messages
I love writing with lipstick on mirrors.
I love how it feels.
Maybe because I learned to write
By tracing letters made out of sandpaper
It hurt so good.
We leave out the physical part of writing sometimes.
The touch.
The feel.
The body-ness.
I get that with lipstick on mirror.
And I love seeing these messages around the house.
I notice them exactly when I need them.
And when I don’t want hear my own advice
They are just bright red energy.
Over the course of the last few years
These lipstick kisses of ideas
These notes to myself
Have changed my life.
I love uncertainty.
There’s more God there.
I didn’t know if I believed it was true.
But I hoped it was.
And was at least willing
To believe in hope.
Over the course of a few years
On day at a time
The unknown
The mystery
The questions
Became more palatable.
And then actually
At least sometimes
Even favored.
Infinite patience.
Immediate results.
That one I wrote on the mirror right across
From my desk.
It did help me slow down
To speed up.
Maybe you use post its.
I just love how visceral the lipstick is.
And demanding.
