Hey there wonderful you!
Welcome to The Infinite Creator substack!
I’ve been here on substack for a minute (maybe a year?! time…)
And I am finally writing the so-called ‘identity post’.
At first it was too soon.
What even is substack
Do I like here
What specifically is my work here?
And then I was too busy.
UnCabaret.
It’s A Lot.
8 Habits of Infinitely Creative People.
A script in development. Keynotes.
The coaching of Infinite Creator clients.
The new book.
Life!
And then it was now!
Now is always the perfect time.
And honestly I am very much looking forward
To finally crossing ‘identity post’ off the list!
What is The Infinite Creator substack?
It’s about the process of creativity.
Insights from observing my own creative process.
Issues that come up for clients as I work with them.
Principles of creativity.
The life around creating.
I’ve shared about issues like…
Not quitting.
Mindset for creatives.
Productivity hacks.
Facing the fear.
Gaining momentum.
Etc etc.
And if you thinking you’re interested
But overwhelmed with reading
Guess what?
There are also podcast posts.
I usually do a podcast version of the written post.
It usually even has some extras/commentary/specials.
Why do I call it The Infinite Creator?
Once upon a time
I noticed I was tracing an infinity sign
With my index finger
On my thumb.
Huhn.
Then I noticed I did it a lot.
Really?
That’s kind of weird.
Then I learned
That the sun traces an infinity sign in the sky each year.
It’s called an annalema.
As if the universe is telling us that there is
Infinite possibility.
Infinite consciousness.
Infinite ways to evolve.
I feel like the infinity sign is for creatives
What the cross is for Christiania’s.
What the broom is for witches.
Not just a symbol.
But a way to understand and deepen a practice.
Withe the infinity sign
There is no end point.
Everything loops back on itself.
While progressing.
The creative life s 100% about process.
But also 100% about product.
Of course that’s more than the whole 100%.
And what’s more than the whole 100%?
Infinity.
Is there an origin story?
Over the years my teaching/coaching/mentoring/musing
Has had different names.
The UnCab Lab.
The Comedian’s Way.
At one point I was talking to a new venue
About what to call a workshop.
They asked for a more descriptive title
Than the then current Beth Lapides Workshop.
As I was describing the work
Of talking on stage in order to develop writing.
(Even if you are never intending to become a stand up).
And writing in order to get better on stage.
(Even if you are never intending to publish or wrote a show).
How writing and performing support and further each other.
I was tracing an infinity loop
In the air with my index finger.
Writing looping into performing looping into writing….
Oh.
The Infinite Writer.
And as my work with students and clients expanded
The writer part seemed restrictive.
It’s bigger than that.
Sometimes it’s producing, directing, making music, acting etc.
Often it’s hyphenates.
Always it’s about choosing projects, making them
And getting them out in the world.
So The Infinite Creator was born.
Importantly
The word creative.
We tend to think it means to make.
But it actually comes from a word that means to grow.
There are so many infinity loops in our creative lives.
But one is so key.
As you grow your work changes.
As your work changes
You change as a person.
Which changes your work.
Which changes you.
Which….
The other infinity loops.
Writing and performing.
Performimg and publishing.
Finding out who you are and doing something about it.
Which changes why you are.
Loving questions gives us answers
Every answers leads to more questions.
I’m always uncovering new ones.
We write to know ourselves
We know ourselves so we can write more honestly
Beyond Substack. What is The Infinite Creator Program and is it right for you?
I help clients turn piles of notes and ideas into projects.
And to get those projects out into the world.
It’s a transformational creativity program.
I work with creatives at all levels.
And there are 4 levels of engagement.
Schedule a free call to find out if it’s right for you.
And which part of the program would be the best fit.
Where this substack exists in my world
Infinite Creator Studios is part of UnCabaret Inc.
UnCab is my long running, genre shifting show.
The thread that connects my many projects.
Where this substack exists in your world:
It’s meant to inspire and encourage you
In your creative life.
Our community is filled with writers, actors, podcasters, directors, standups.
Did I mention writers?
So many varieties.
Non-fiction, memoir, film, theater, music
Fiction, storytellers, solo show, poets, cookbook, song.
And in some ways every single creative is at heart a writer.
How do you talk about your work.
To yourself.
To your audience.
To investors.
To collaborators.
The whole endeavor is a conversation.
Reach out of you have questions
Always feel free to reach out.
I’ve built a life filled with creative people
As a buffer to the vast lonely void.
Infinity is inspiring.
Awesome.
And also sometimes daunting.
Ha ha.
So I love hearing from you.
For now, and infinitely yours,
Beth
PS one of the other infinity loop things in my life.
Very soon after I noticed I was tracing the sign on my hand
My whole life started to change very quickly.
During that time I started to write songs
And learn to sing
With an amazingly talented musician.
And of course earned the piano has 88 keys.
88!
Double infinity.
A completely impossible thing.
That musician and I fell in love as we worked.
And twelve years later here we are.
Still collaborating in both work
And life.
