You
And your amazing work
It’s a lot! The catastrophe! The nightmare! The other disaster! Everything is truly urgent!
Still - if you are a creator - I’m talking about you writers, artists, producers, musicians, storytellers, speakers, podcasters, screenwriters, memoirists, twitchers, directors, etc etc etc… There is one thing of utmost urgency.
And only you can put it on the top of your list:
¡¡¡¡¡¡Your work¡¡¡¡¡
I hear you taking a breath.
I hear you wanting it to be true.
I hear you comparing your creative spark - that tiny infinitely powerful tip of a pin sized thing - to the gaping maw of the problems of the whirled.
Your perfect pitch yes - to the sirens and howling winds.
Even knowing that, as they say, comparisons are odious - and this one is nonsensical. We do it.
And yet we need you to put it on the top of your list.
Or at least near.
Your creative work is the light - not necessarily the muscle.
We are still all called to be citizens.
But the murk calls for your light.
First to light you up.
Then to light up and lift up everyone you touch.
And everyone they touch.
(FU TO JE for making touch sound creepy)
Art is, as they say, the highest form of hope.
And hope?
It’s not just about the future.
Hope is a way to live in the present.
A way to connect the past, present and future.
Hope is connective.
And connectivity is the antidote to isolation, alienation, fear and the gremlins of manufactured overwhelm.
It’s our job - or at least one of our jobs - to cultivate hope.
Don’t shy away from this because it feels corny.
You can call it whatever you want.
Beauty. Hilarity. Wake up calls.
Hope goes by many names.
And what I’ve found - doing my own work and helping countless other creatives do theirs - is that the path to hope generation - is working on the projects that are most aligned with our - mission, soul, heart’s desires. The ones that only we can create. That seem to be assigned to us. Have our names written all over them.
I like to remember that the word create comes from a word meaning to grow.
We use it to mean making stuff.
But creators are growers.
Evolving, changing, revolutionizing, blooming, rooting. Living.
Growth is hope.
This works is the clear antidote to the wretched gold plated death culture we find ourselves in.
And hallelujah to you for doing the work, walking the path, having the courage. Getting up every day wading through your scroll and yet suiting up to rock and roll. For taking making the calls, hotting the streets, watching out for neighbors and then facing the bank page to shape it all into something meaningful, hilarious, moving.
You are not alone.
Thank you for all you do to light up the world.
Ever and infinitely yours,
xx
